Sharing Space Down Under

The Parramatta Shared Space City Surgery was a full day workshop to examine an existing road treatment in the heart of metropolitan Sydney to develop potential shared space solutions based on existing evidence and learnings from around the world.

Shared Space is a viable concept for traffic calming where all road users have the same rights. Not all countries have the same legal view of pedestrians. The design challenge is to create an environment where all road users equally integrate. Shared space pilots were first introduced in the Netherlands 15 years ago where the concept is now applied in cities as well as villages and neighbourhoods. Evaluations have now been completed across various environments demonstrating successes and challenges. The shared space concept is spreading across the world with select examples established throughout Australia. The purpose of the full day shared space city surgery was to examine an existing road treatment and prepare design solutions to convert it to a shared space.
